CAUSE II Improves Material Storage Facilities in Gizo

IMPROVEMENT works are underway on two key material storage facilities in Gizo under the CAUSE II Project, enhancing the safety, functionality, and longevity of infrastructure used to support project implementation in Western Province.

The Banana Valley & Western Provincial Government (WPG) Wharf Storage Improvement Sub-project comprises works at two separate locations currently used by the Gizo Project Implementation Unit (PIU) for storing construction materials and equipment.

At Banana Valley, improvement works are being carried out on a 20-foot shipping container used to store hardware materials. The works include cleaning the container, elevating it from ground level onto a raised base, and installing a new floor frame to improve durability and protect stored materials.

At the WPG Wharf Storage site, a new fence is being constructed to replace the old perimeter fence that suffered extensive corrosion damage during the implementation of the CAUSE I Project. The storage area is used for stockpiling gravel and fine sand for ongoing and future project activities.

Although located at separate sites, the two activities have been packaged as a single sub-project under CAUSE II's Public Space Improvement (PSI) category.

The sub-project has also created short-term employment opportunities for residents, with ten workers engaged in the works.

The improvements will strengthen the project's capacity to safely store construction materials and support the efficient delivery of infrastructure and community development activities across Gizo and surrounding areas.

The CAUSE II Project is implemented by the Solomon Islands Government with support from the World Bank and the Australian Government through the PNG and Pacific Islands Umbrella Facility Multi-Donor Trust Fund.
