CAUSE II Jericho Footpath Construction Progresses at Grass Valley

CONSTRUCTION of a new 270-metre footpath at Grass Valley, on the outskirts of Honiara, is progressing steadily under the Community Access and Urban Services Enhancement Project II (CAUSE II).

The Jericho footpath is being constructed to improve safe and reliable access for residents who have traditionally relied on a rough and uneven dirt track to enter and leave the community.

Construction has now surpassed 50 percent of the planned formwork, while more than 50 metres of the pathway have been poured, cured and completed.

The project is expected to provide a more durable, all-weather route for Grass Valley residents, particularly during periods of heavy rain when the existing track can become muddy, slippery and difficult to navigate.

For elderly residents and people with mobility challenges, the condition of the existing access route has presented additional difficulties and safety concerns.

Once completed, the new footpath will replace the existing dirt track with a more stable and accessible pathway, improving movement within and in and out of the community.

The progress is already visible across Grass Valley, with sections of the new pathway taking shape as construction continues. The improvement in access is expected to support residents in carrying out everyday activities, including travelling to work and school, accessing shops and services, and moving more easily around the community regardless of weather conditions. Community members have welcomed the ongoing works and expressed appreciation for the improvements the completed footpath is expected to bring.

The Jericho footpath is one of CAUSE II's community-level infrastructure interventions aimed at improving access and supporting safer and more inclusive communities.

The project also demonstrates the programme's focus on addressing practical infrastructure needs in communities where poor access can affect people's mobility, safety and connection to essential services.

With more than half of the formwork already completed and over 50 metres of concrete laid, construction is continuing towards completion of the 270-metre Jericho footpath, which is expected to provide Grass Valley residents with safer and more reliable access throughout the year.

Implemented by the Solomon Islands Government, the CAUSE II Project is supported by the World Bank and the Australian Government through the PNG and Pacific Islands Umbrella Facility Multi-Donor Trust Fund.
