The Community Access and Urban Services Enhancement II (CAUSE II) Project has engaged three local contractors to commence restoration works on nine unsealed road segments across Honiara this October. The works, totaling 5,500 meters in length, will continue through February 2026 and are designed to improve accessibility and enhance public service delivery, including household waste collection.

These priority roads were selected in collaboration with the Honiara City Council (HCC) and the Ministry of Infrastructure Development (MID) to ensure improved access for vulnerable communities, particularly in densely populated areas where poor road conditions have long hindered mobility and access to essential services.

Following the restoration phase, CAUSE II will mobilize local community groups to carry out routine maintenance activities such as pothole repair, vegetation clearing, roadside drain cleaning, and general upkeep. This dual approach not only ensures the sustainability of the road assets but also promotes local economic inclusion.

By engaging community members in maintenance, CAUSE II aims to build local capacity, create short-term employment opportunities, and foster a sense of ownership and stewardship over shared infrastructure. The initiative aligns with CAUSE II’s broader objective of enhancing urban resilience through inclusive service delivery and climate-smart infrastructure solutions.

The road works are expected to reduce transport disruptions, support waste collection logistics, and improve safety and connectivity in vulnerable urban settlements.

The Community Access and Urban Services Enhancement II (CAUSE II) Project is a transformative initiative aimed at improving climate-resilient infrastructure, enhancing economic inclusion, and strengthening service delivery in targeted urban centers across the Solomon Islands. Led by the Ministry of Infrastructure Development and Honiara City Council, in collaboration with the Ministry of Lands, Housing and Survey, and the Provincial Governments of Guadalcanal, Malaita, and Western Province, CAUSE II is a Government of Solomon Islands initiative. The project is supported by the World Bank and the Government of Australia through the Papua New Guinea and Pacific Islands Umbrella Facility Multi-Donor Trust Fund (PPIUF).
