Community Stream Cleanup Gains Momentum from Jericho to Matariu

HONIARA, Solomon Islands – A COMMUNITY-led stream cleanup under the CAUSE II Project is making steady progress from Jericho to Matariu, with strong participation driving early success.

Teams have been clearing rubbish along the stream and nearby tributaries, supported by an effective collection point at the Matariu ford, particularly benefiting Jericho 1 and 2 communities. Beyond the cleanup, workers are actively raising awareness to stop illegal dumping, helping shift community attitudes toward better waste management and sanitation.

Community Liaison Officer (CLO) Penny Siliako highlighted, “We initially had three groups of seven members each. Currently two of these teams have completed their 20-day work, with only one team actively working. The teams have shown great dedication, everyone is taking ownership and the community response has been very positive.”

The initiative has seen inclusive participation from men, women, and youth, reflecting growing community ownership. Residents have responded positively, welcoming the effort and recognising its environmental and health benefits.

While challenges remain—including sanitation concerns from pig enclosures near the stream and limited access to downstream areas—plans are underway to strengthen awareness campaigns and introduce measures such as trash traps at key locations. With continued community support, the initiative is expected to significantly improve the cleanliness and health of the stream system that leads toward Vara Creek and eventually Mataniko River.

Meanwhile two of the three teams (Jericho 1 and Jericho 2) have completed their 20-work, with the third (Ferakusia) expected to be completed by the end of the week. Another two teams are prepared to resume stream cleaning work from Matariu to Mata Valley next week.

CAUSE II, implemented by the Solomon Islands Government, is supported by the World Bank and Australia through the PNG and Pacific Islands Umbrella Facility Multi-Donor Trust Fund.
