Footbridge Construction Begins at Lower Jericho 1 Community
THE Community Access and Urban Services Enhancement II (CAUSE II) Project has officially commenced construction of a new footbridge at the Lower Jericho 1 Community in Central Honiara this week.
Implemented by the Solomon Islands Government with support from the World Bank and the Australian Government, the construction and rehabilitation of footbridges is a key activity under Component 2 of the CAUSE II Project.
CAUSE II recognizes that many urban and peri-urban communities, including Jericho 1, face challenging terrain and poor connectivity. Footbridges therefore play an important role in improving safe pedestrian access across creeks and flood-prone areas, while also supporting mobility, social inclusion and community resilience.
The new footbridge is expected to improve access for residents, particularly women, children, the elderly, churchgoers, and market vendors who rely on safe daily access within the community.
Work commenced following an orientation for community workers conducted by the CAUSE II Project Management Unit (PMU), led by Works Supervisor, Edward John.
Mr John said the induction covered key areas including site attendance, workplace safety, work organisation, contract payments, proper handling of tools, grievance procedures, and worker performance expectations.
“I am pleased that all workers clearly understand their responsibilities, the scope of work, and the timeframe for completion. The workers are motivated and excited to begin construction of the footbridge,” he said.
Jericho 1 Community Work Group Leader, John Sae, also welcomed the commencement of the project and acknowledged the enthusiasm shown by community workers.
“Everyone is ready and committed to the work ahead. Many members of our group have been looking forward to the start of this project, and we are happy that work has now officially begun. We are committed to completing the footbridge on time and to the best of our abilities,” Mr Sae said.
The Lower Jericho 1 footbridge is expected to be completed by the end of June.
The CAUSE II Project is implemented by the Solomon Islands Government with support from the World Bank and the Australian Government through the PNG and Pacific Islands Umbrella Facility Multi-Donor Trust Fund.
