Green Valley Residents Take Action To Improve Road
HONIARA, Solomon Islands — NINE community members in Green Valley are working together to improve local road conditions, with rehabilitation and maintenance activities covering approximately 850 metres of road to help make travel safer, convenient and easier for residents.
The work is being carried out under the CAUSE II Project’s community-based Road Rehabilitation and Maintenance (RRM) initiative, which supports local communities to improve road conditions while providing short-term employment opportunities.
Over a 20-day period, the team is undertaking drainage debris clearing, removing built-up mud from drains, cutting back roadside vegetation and patching potholes.
The team comprises nine local men and women from Green Valley, giving community members an opportunity to earn short-term income while contributing directly to improvements in their own community.
Team Leader Nicholas Fiula said community members had welcomed the initiative, particularly vehicle owners who would benefit from improvements to potholes and poor drainage along the road.
The initiative highlights how community-based road maintenance can help improve local infrastructure and accessibility while involving residents in maintaining the roads they rely on every day.
Implemented by the Solomon Islands Government, the CAUSE II Project is supported by the World Bank and the Australian Government through the PNG and Pacific Islands Umbrella Facility Multi-Donor Trust Fund.
