Street Cleaning and Solar Lighting Improve Community Life in Auki

AUKI, Malaita Province, Solomon Islands — ONGOING street cleaning and solar lighting installation activities under the CAUSE II Project are helping improve safety, accessibility and cleanliness in Auki.

Street cleaning groups continue to maintain roads and public spaces across Auki town, supporting Malaita Provincial Government’s efforts to keep the town clean as road upgrading works progress.

At the Kwainaketo water source, solar lighting along the Jacob Ladder footpath is making it easier for women to wash household items at night.

At Kwaibala Community, lighting is also improving visibility around the steel bridge near Ngalisagore, helping residents see more clearly after dark.

The work is also encouraging greater community awareness of proper waste disposal, with residents increasingly helping to keep Auki clean by placing rubbish in appropriate locations.

Together, these activities demonstrate how community infrastructure and routine maintenance can contribute to safer, cleaner and more accessible public spaces.

Implemented by the Solomon Islands Government, the CAUSE II Project is supported by the World Bank and the Australian Government through the PNG and Pacific Islands Umbrella Facility Multi-Donor Trust Fund.
