Koloale Drainage Upgrade Nears Completion Amid Steady Progress
HONIARA, Solomon Islands – THE Koloale Drainage Improvement Project is on track for completion this week, marking a significant step toward improved flood management and community resilience in Honiara.
Supported by the World Bank and the Australian Government under the Community Access and Urban Services Enhancement II (CAUSE II) Project, the drainage upgrade has reached approximately 90 percent completion, with steady progress continuing on site.
The reinforced drainage channel is designed to improve water flow, reduce flooding during periods of heavy rainfall, and protect nearby homes and footpaths from erosion. These upgrades form part of CAUSE II’s broader commitment to delivering practical, climate-resilient infrastructure that directly benefits local communities.
Recent adverse weather conditions in Honiara have caused minor delays; however, work has continued throughout.
Community Liaison Officer Penny Siliako noted that despite slower progress during the past week, the project remains firmly on schedule.
“Work continued throughout the bad weather last week, although at a much slower pace. The project is now approximately 90 percent complete, with only about 25 meters of drainage left to be concreted. If weather conditions improve, we expect to complete the remaining works by this Friday (17/04/26),” he said.
Beyond its infrastructure benefits, the project has also created short-term employment opportunities for local residents, including youth, contributing to economic inclusion while enhancing public safety.
Community members involved in the works expressed pride in their contribution, highlighting both the physical improvements and the positive social impact within the community.
“We are proud to be part of this important project. It not only improves our community’s infrastructure but also supports our livelihoods. It has brought renewed energy and positivity to our community,” they shared.
CAUSE II, implemented by the Solomon Islands Government, is supported by the World Bank and the Australian Government through the PNG and Pacific Islands Umbrella Facility Multi-Donor Trust Fund. The initiative aims to improve urban infrastructure, strengthen climate resilience, and create employment opportunities across key urban centers in Solomon Islands.
