CAUSE II Street-Cleaning Groups Step Up Work Ahead of Malaita Day Celebrations

AUKI, Malaita Province – EIGHT community street-cleaning groups engaged under the Community Access and Urban Services Enhancement II (CAUSE II) Project continue to support efforts to keep Auki Town clean as Malaita Province prepares to host its 43rd Second Appointed Day celebrations this November.
The groups are currently carrying out cleaning activities across Auki, helping maintain the town's streets and public spaces ahead of the week-long celebrations scheduled for November 11–18, 2026.
With visitors expected from across the country and overseas, the groups will continue their cleaning activities from November 11 to 20, ensuring that Auki remains clean and welcoming throughout the celebrations and beyond.
The ongoing activities form part of CAUSE II's Waste Cleaning and Collection (WCC) programme under Component 2 – Safe and Inclusive Communities, which supports community-based urban services while creating short-term employment opportunities for residents.
Since May 2025, the programme has supported regular waste cleaning and collection activities across Auki and its surrounding areas. Previous project reporting recorded 99 completed WCC contracts across nine segments, with strong participation from women and young people.
Through these activities, CAUSE II is not only helping improve the cleanliness and appearance of Auki but also encouraging greater community responsibility in maintaining public spaces and promoting proper rubbish disposal.
The continued efforts of the eight groups reflect the importance of community participation in keeping Auki clean, particularly as Malaita prepares to welcome people home and visitors to the provincial capital for this important annual celebration.
Implemented by the Solomon Islands Government, the CAUSE II Project is supported by the World Bank and the Australian Government through the PNG and Pacific Islands Umbrella Facility Multi-Donor Trust Fund.
