Noro Fish Market and Jetty Receives Facelift

THE Noro Fish Market is currently undergoing a facelift that includes the construction of a new lower landing deck at its existing jetty and a new fish stall facility.

Under Component 2: Safe and Inclusive Communities of the CAUSE II Project, work on these new infrastructural developments recently started.

For many years, the Noro Fish Market has served as an important trading point for local fishermen, fish vendors and residents purchasing fresh seafood within the township and nearby communities.

Located in one of the country's main fisheries centers, the market continues to support small-scale fish sellers and contributes to the local economy through daily fish trading and other related economic activities. The ongoing developments are aimed at improving market accessibility, safety, and convenience for fish vendors, fishermen, and customers who rely heavily on the market for their daily livelihoods and fresh fish supply.

One of the key developments currently underway is the construction of an additional lower landing deck at the existing Noro Market jetty located right in front of the fish market.

The lower landing deck is expected to improve the unloading and handling of fish catches, especially during varying tide conditions, while also enhancing safety and allowing more landing space for fishermen and market users accessing the jetty especially during peak hours.

In addition to the jetty, improvement works - a new fish stall is also being constructed.

Once completed, the new fish stall is expected to provide a more organized and hygienic selling environment for vendors, while improving the overall appearance and operation of the market.

Both projects are expected to be completed by June.

These developments form part of ongoing efforts under the CAUSE II Project to support community infrastructure, create employment opportunities, and strengthen local economic activities in urban communities across Noro, Munda, Gizo, Auki and Honiara.

Community members and market vendors have welcomed the developments, saying the improvements will contribute positively to business activities and the marketing of fresh fish products in Noro.

CAUSE II, implemented by the Solomon Islands Government, is supported by the World Bank and the Australian Government through the PNG and Pacific Islands Umbrella Facility Multi-Donor Trust Fund.
